2022 Concerto Competition

2022 Les Violons du Roy Concerto Competition
In Partnership with Domaine Forget de Charlevoix


GENERAL CONDITIONS

  • This international competition is open to advanced string musicians (violinists, violists, cellists, double bassists) ages 25 and under.
  • The competition is not open to 1st prize winners of the competition from previous years.
  • Finalists from previous years who would like to enter this year should submit a different piece than previously.
  • Use of a prerecorded accompaniment is not allowed.

HOW TO ENTER

Entry and submission deadline: Friday, March 11, 2022, at 11:59 p.m. ET

Participants must submit:

  • A video of themselves playing a full baroque concerto or a fast movement from a classical concerto with a cadenza, with or without keyboard accompaniment. Video must have been recorded within the past year and should be approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Their CV
  • A completed entry form
  • A cover letter of no more than 300 words or a five-minute video summarizing their background and future plans
  • A copy of a valid ID showing their date of birth (health insurance card, driver’s licence, passport)
  • Entry fee of C$40 taxes included

Email your application materials to mrooke@violonsduroy.com with the subject line “Application First Name Last Name”. We encourage you to use a Google Drive, Dropbox, or WeTransfer link. If any items are missing or received after the deadline, you will be automatically disqualified.

HOW THE COMPETITION WORKS

Selection of finalists
Up to 10 finalists will be selected by a jury made up of Les Violons du Roy musicians, Les Violons du Roy music director Jonathan Cohen, and Domaine Forget de Charlevoix artistic director Paul Fortin. The finalists will be announced in the week of April 4, 2022.

Mentoring
To help them work on their concerto pieces, finalists will be mentored individually in an online class with Les Violons du Roy musicians during the month of April. They will also take part in a one-on-one online class open to the public with Les Violons du Roy music director Jonathan Cohen.

Final
Finalists have until 11:59 p.m. on Friday, May 6, 2022, to send a new video of the same piece they submitted earlier.

The winners will be announced online on Friday, May 13, 2022, at 5 p.m.


PRIZES

1st prize:

  • Cash prize of C$2,000 awarded by Les Violons du Roy
  • A full scholarship to take part in the Académie du Domaine Forget de Charlevoix 2022 chamber orchestra workshop from August 8 to 21, 2022
  • An invitation to perform a solo with Les Violons du Roy during the workshop

2nd prize:

  • Cash prize of C$1,000 awarded by Fonds Claude-Samson pour Les Violons du Roy
  • A full scholarship to take part in the Académie du Domaine Forget de Charlevoix 2022 chamber orchestra workshop from August 8 to 21, 2022

3rd prize:

  • Cash prize of C$750 awarded by Les Violons du Roy Foundation
  • A full scholarship to take part in the Académie du Domaine Forget de Charlevoix 2022 chamber orchestra workshop from August 8 to 21, 2022
