A meeting with the sublime Dixit Dominus by Handel, a work of remarkable vocal virtuosity and expressive power, making it one of the composer’s greatest choral masterpieces. Bach’s motet Jesu, meine Freude also belongs to the finest sacred repertoire of the entire Baroque era. Opening the program is a brief yet deeply moving motet by Bach’s predecessor at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig.

This concert is presented with the support of the Azrieli Foundation and The Flora Ann Birks Foundation.

Duration: 1 hour and 45 minutes, including a 20-minute intermission

About the Work

Composed in 1707 in Rome, when Handel was just 22 years old, the Dixit Dominus is one of the most virtuosic and striking choral works in the Baroque repertoire. Set to Psalm 110, this early masterpiece already reveals an extraordinary compositional genius.

Rome, 1707: A City Buzzing with Music

In Rome, the papal ban on public opera performances seemed to fuel the flames rather than extinguish them. Under the guise of oratorios and cantatas, operatic vocal music made its way into the Catholic Church, with several cardinals — Pamphili, Ottoboni and Colonna — becoming patrons of composers. The palaces of these wealthy clergymen became secret havens for opera. It was in this vibrant environment that the young Handel composed the Dixit Dominus.

A Work That Moves Its Audiences

The Dixit Dominus is one of Handel's first compositions for choir — a breathtaking work that moved the religious authorities so deeply that they offered to convert him to Catholicism, which he politely declined.

An Extraordinary Musical Challenge

By far the most demanding work Handel ever wrote for voices, it is a fascinating fusion of German and Italian styles. The brilliance of the fugal and contrapuntal sections is particularly striking — at times, three or four figures unfold simultaneously, distributed among the different vocal parts and the orchestra.

The score is written for five vocal soloists, a five-part chorus and a five-part string orchestra — a grand concerto for all these forces, in which Handel demands energy and breadth, phenomenal agility and precision, declamatory vigour and lyrical expressiveness.

A Foreshadowing of the Messiah

Although Handel would not compose Messiah until thirty-five years later, he thoroughly explores here the choral and orchestral structures and textures that would become its hallmarks. The Dixit Dominus thus stands as the secret blueprint for one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of music.

A landmark Work

The Dixit Dominus surpasses Handel's two other Latin psalm settings in both scope and design. Its universal appeal makes it today an essential choice for festive worship services and major concert stages alike.
