Final of the 2025 Violons du Roy Concerto Competition

The sixth edition of the Violons du Roy Concerto Competition came to a close on August 13, 2025, following performances by each of the three finalists at Domaine Forget in Charlevoix.

The winner, cellist Thomas Lim, will perform as a soloist with Les Violons du Roy under the baton of Jonathan Cohen during the concert Un opéra imaginaire on Sunday, August 17, at 3 p.m., as part of the Académie du Domaine Forget de Charlevoix concerts.

In addition to the chamber orchestra internship at the Académie du Domaine Forget de Charlevoix, the finalists in this competition receive support from the musicians and musical director to prepare a Baroque or Classical concerto for the competition final.

Here is the list of finalists:

1st prize
Thomas Lim (23), cellist from Saratoga, California

  • An invitation to perform as a soloist with Les Violons du Roy during the chamber orchestra workshop at the Académie du Domaine Forget de Charlevoix, specifically during the concert Un opéra imaginaire presented this Sunday, August 17, at 3 p.m.
  • A cash prize of $2,000 CAD offered by Les Violons du Roy
  • A full scholarship offered by Domaine Forget de Charlevoix to take part in the chamber orchestra workshop at the Académie du Domaine Forget de Charlevoix

2nd prize
Ashley Tsai (19), violinist from Calgary

  • A cash prize of CAD$1,000 offered by the Fonds Claude Samson for Les Violons du Roy
  • A full scholarship offered by Domaine Forget de Charlevoix to participate in the chamber orchestra workshop at the Académie du Domaine Forget de Charlevoix

3rd prize
Annabelle Chouinard (24), violinist from Montreal

  • A cash prize of $750 CAD offered by the Fondation des Violons du Roy
  • A full scholarship offered by Domaine Forget de Charlevoix to participate in the chamber orchestra workshop at the Académie du Domaine Forget de Charlevoix
