On Saturday, February 5, Alexandre Tharaud, one of the leading pianists of his generation, will showcase his virtuosity, rigor, and sensibility as he performs two concertos, including Mozart’s 9th, the “Jeunehomme.” The concert will also give Bernard Labadie and Les Violons du Roy an opportunity to introduce audiences to Joseph Martin Kraus, an unjustly neglected master of the Classical period.
Alexandre Tharaud rocketed onto the international scene ten years ago with a brilliant recording of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s work and continues to make his mark with highly personal interpretations of a repertoire that extends from Bach and Couperin to Chopin, Ravel, and Satie. With Les Violons du Roy, he’ll be plunging into the Classical repertoire with Haydn’s sparkling Concerto in D Major, Hob XVIII, no. 11—Haydn’s most beloved keyboard concerto—and Mozart’s Concerto in B-flat Major, number 9, the “Jeunehomme,” a luminous work filled with affectionate and expansive interplay between soloist and orchestra.
The orchestral part of the concert will be devoted to Joseph Martin Kraus (1756–1792). Highly esteemed in his day, this German contemporary of Mozart had numerous admirers, including Haydn, who described Kraus as “one of the greatest geniuses” he had ever known, while Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach claimed “in some respects [to] prefer him to Mozart.” Bernard Labadie will conduct two works: the F Major Symphony, VB141, and the E Minor Symphony, VB130.
The concert will be followed by a signing with Bernard Labadie.
