LES VIOLONS DU ROY RELEASES NEW ALBUM
Quebec City, September 27, 2018 - Les Violons du Roy is pleased to present a new album featuring works by George Frideric Handel and Philip Glass. It’s the first solo album by American countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo and Les Violons du Roy’s first recording under the direction of Jonathan Cohen.
The album, entitled Anthony Roth Costanzo Glass-Handel, was recorded in the Raoul-Jobin Hall of Palais Montcalm - Maison de la musique in the summer of 2017 and is Les Violons du Roy’s 35th album. The disc was released under Universal Music’s prestigious Decca Gold label (catalogue no. B0028648-02) to celebrate the start of the orchestra’s 35th season.
“Anthony Roth Costanzo invited me to work with him on the recording and then I invited Les Violons du Roy,” explains Jonathan Cohen. “This project is a real treat for me. It’s always a pleasure to work with Anthony Roth Costanzo—he’s an amazing countertenor. And the musicians of Les Violons du Roy have an incredible versatility that’s really apparent in their interpretation of these works. I’m also very impressed by the caliber of the work done by Decca Gold. The album will definitely bring Les Violons du Roy to new audiences at home and abroad,” adds Cohen.
Countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, winner of the 2012 Operalia prize and a regular performer at the Metropolitan Opera, says of the project, “For me, singing is about emotion, and both Handel and Glass generate a kind of cathartic drama, but often in completely different ways. With my voice and this wonderful orchestra bridging the gap between the two, I can’t wait to explore how these operatic emotions can impact a wide spectrum of listeners. It’s thrilling to create a project as daring as this with the collaboration and support of a major label like Decca Gold.”
The recording includes Handel’s arias “Pena tiranna” from Amadigi di Gaula and “Stille amare” from Tolomeo, and selections from Philip Glass’s oeuvre, including the “Hymn” from Akhnaten. Frequent Philip Glass collaborator Michael Riesman has created brand new arrangements of other works by Glass specifically for this recording.
