LES VIOLONS DU ROY JOIN FORCES WITH ORCHESTRE ROYAL DE CHAMBRE DE WALLONIE TO COMMEMORATE ARMISTICE DAY
Québec City, October 30, 2018 – To mark the First World War armistice centenary, Les Violons du Roy are pleased to join Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie (ORCW) for a three-concert tour from November 10 to 12. Through the Amitiés belgo-canadiennes project, the two ensembles will pay tribute to the soldiers who died in the Battle of Mons in Belgium in 1918. The tour includes three concerts on the following dates:
Saturday, November 10 at 8 p.m., Théâtre Royal, Mons
Sunday, November 11 at 3:30 p.m., Grand-Place, Mons
Monday, November 12 at 8:30 p.m., Théâtre de Namur
*The concerts on November 10 and 11 will be broadcast by Radio Télévision Belge Francophone (RTBF).
On November 10 and 12, the ensembles will each perform a work from the string orchestra repertoire, with Les Violons du Roy interpreting a piece by Ysaÿe and ORCW performing a piece by Barber. The two orchestras will then unite under the direction of Frank Braley to perform November, a piece by Belgian-Canadian composer Michel Lysight written specially for this event. To round out the program, the ensembles will perform works by Mahler and Martinů.
For the armistice centenary on November 11, Les Violons du Roy, ORCW, and England’s Leatherhead Choral Society will take part in commemorative ceremonies organized by the City of Mons. Together they will perform Barber’s Adagio and Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, among others.
Through the Amitiés belgo-canadiennes project, Les Violons du Roy will showcase Quebec talent on the world stage and represent Canada at this prominent international event.
Les Violons du Roy are among the most active Canadian orchestras on the international market. August 24, 2018, marked the 30th anniversary of the ensemble’s first concert abroad in 1988 in Nieuwmunster, Belgium. The orchestra’s musicians are proud to be performing with their Belgian colleagues this year on the occasion of the armistice centenary.
Les Violons du Roy would like to thank the Canada Council for the Arts and the City of Quebec for their support.
