Quebec City, January 23, 2019 - Music director Jonathan Cohen and Les Violons du Roy are teaming up with cellist Nicolas Altstaedt to present two of the most beautiful music ever written for the cello: the concertos of C.P.E. Bach and F.J. Haydn. The concert will be given on Thursday, January 31, at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Palais Montcalm - Maison de la musique in Quebec City and on Friday, February 1, at 7:30 p.m. at Bourgie Hall in the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Cellist Nicolas Altstaedt is one of today’s most sought after and accomplished artists: a soloist, conductor, and artistic director who has mastered a vast repertoire of ancient and contemporary music. A frequent musical partner of Jonathan Cohen, he has performed alongside the maestro on some of the world’s most prestigious stages. Their recordings of C.P.E. Bach’s cello concertos for the Hyperion label earned them a BBC Music Magazine award in 2017.

The program also features symphonies by C.P.E. Bach and F.J. Haydn, played with brio by Les Violons du Roy. With this concert, the audience will be treated to works from a particularly fascinating and bold period in 18th century music. The repertoire of the Sturm und Drang movement gives the orchestra a chance to thrill the audience with moments of sudden exaltation: abrupt changes in volume and register, finely accentuated melodic lines, rapid modulations, and unexpected rhythms. Join us for these imaginative, virtuosic works.
