CANTATES DE BACH, L'ÉTOILE DU MATIN
Quebec City, March 7, 2018 — Les Violons du Roy invites you to an intimate gathering under the baton of new music director Jonathan Cohen to experience three glorious cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach. Three radiant guest soloists—soprano Anna Dennis, tenor Andrew Tortise, and baritone Neal Davies—will join the orchestra to make this truly a night of Baroque enchantment. Performances will take place Thursday, March 22 at 8 p.m. at Palais Montcalm - Maison de la musique in Quebec City and Sunday, March 25 at 2 p.m. at Bourgie Hall, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
Les Violons du Roy will bring their special grace to cantatas Was willst du dich betrüben, BWV 107 and Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern, BWV 1. The second of the two—rooted in the tradition of German church music that Bach’s genius raised to new and previously unknown heights—had its first performance on Palm Sunday 1725. Rounding out the program is the secular cantata O holder Tag, erwünschte Zeit, BWV 210 a wedding cantata for solo soprano showcasing the spellbinding Anna Dennis.
Jonathan Cohen will meet with Quebec City concert-goers at 6:30 p.m. in the Palais Montcalm — Maison de la musique foyer before the concert on Thursday, March 22, at 6:30 p.m., to unveil the 2018–2019 season program. Don’t miss this opportunity to celebrate the launch of the 35th season program of Les Violons du Roy and La Chapelle de Québec—Jonathan Cohen’s first as music director of Les Violons du Roy.
