BERNARD LABADIE CONDUCTS BACH'S MASS IN B MINOR

Quebec City, April 4, 2019 - Founding conductor Bernard Labadie joins with Les Violons du Roy, La Chapelle de Quebec, and four acclaimed soloists to present Johann Sebastian Bach’s Mass in B Minor (BWV 232)—one of the crowning glories of Western music—in Quebec City, New York, and Montreal.

Saturday, May 4, at 8 p.m., Raoul-Jobin Hall, Palais Montcalm – Maison de la musique, Quebec City
Sunday, May 5, at 2 p.m., Raoul-Jobin Hall, Palais Montcalm – Maison de la musique, Quebec City
Tuesday, May 7, at 8 p.m., Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage, Carnegie Hall, New York
Saturday, May 11, at 7:30 p.m., Maison symphonique de Montréal, Montreal

Maestro Labadie has assembled a group of prestigious soloists for the occasion: soprano Lydia Teuscher, countertenor Iestyn Davies, tenor Robin Tritschler, and bass-baritone Matthew Brook. Together with orchestra and chamber choir, they will lend their unique voices to this monumental work renowned for its stylistic variety and exquisite blend of instrumental and vocal timbres. Following the usual liturgical formula (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei), the Mass in B minor contrasts serene instrumental passages with magnificent choral sections that evoke the splendour of the divine. This masterpiece, composed near the end of Bach’s career, is considered the synthesis of his life’s work.

Les Violons du Roy and La Chapelle de Québec, both of which are critically acclaimed for their interpretations of Bach’s music, are revisiting the B Minor Mass for the first time in seventeen years. Led by maestro Bernard Labadie, they will once again act as Quebec’s cultural ambassadors at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
