Quebec City, November 13, 2018 – Music director Jonathan Cohen is delighted to welcome Avi Avital, the first solo mandolinist ever to be invited to play with Les Violons du Roy, in a Baroque program featuring instrumental works by Vivaldi and Handel. The performances will be on Thursday, November 22 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Quebec City’s Palais Montcalm - Maison de la musique and Friday, November 23 at 7:30 p.m. at Bourgie Hall, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Internationally acclaimed in classical mandolin circles for his surprisingly virtuosic playing, Avi Avital was the first solo mandolinist to be nominated for a Grammy in the classical music category (2010). With his passion and “explosive charisma” (The New York Times), he’s sparked a mandolin repertoire renaissance. Avital has an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon and has recorded four albums with the label.

For his first appearance with Les Violons du Roy he will play two Vivaldi concertos and a third attributed to Giovanni Paisiello. String works by Handel, Avison, and Durante will round out the all Baroque program.

The 2 p.m. concert in Raoul Jobin Hall at Palais Montcalm - Maison de la musique will be followed by a talkback with the artists. The 8 p.m. concert will be preceded by an on stage interview with Avi Avital starting at 7:10 p.m. As for the concert at Bourgie Hall, it will be recorded by ICI MUSIQUE and broadcast on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at 8 p.m. on Toute une musique, hosted by Marie-Christine Trottier.
